looking good = feeling great

Have you ever seen TLC’s What Not To Wear? For me, it’s the personal image and style bible. I usually end up in tears by the end of each episode because the people they make over are completely transformed and end up feeling great about themselves. Stacy and Clinton, the show’s hosts, teach women how to dress for their body type and work with what they’ve got right now! Here is one of my favorite make overs:

The other day, Jenn, one of my young professional clients, was talking to me about her work wear and how looking good makes her feel great and how the right (or wrong) outfit can really make or break her day. I completely agree with her! She felt like it’s often taboo for women to discuss the importance of keeping up with their hair, make-up and clothing in a professional environment. If I had anything to do with America’s healthcare system, I would include a makeover for everyone, every 5 years. This would boost self esteem and the overall outlook we have on life and make it a psychologically healthier country to live in! One thing Jenn brought up, was how she isn’t good at accessorizing or mixing and matching, which, ends up limiting her options. Below, I have 3 basic dresses which can be worn in so many different ways by just changing necklaces and shoes. You could wear them week after week and always look fresh and different. Each of the dresses come in sizes 0-16 and are flattering for most body types. (One big thing I have learned from WNTW is the importance of a tailor because not everything fits everyone perfectly right off the rack) Investing in some well made key pieces is essential. After that, you can mix it up with inexpensive jewelry and fun shoes!

The necklaces are fun and are all under $10 from F21. You can find them here: Red Flowers Green and Gold Yellow Beads
The dresses are all from Banana Republic and you can find them here: Aimee, Sofia,
Contrast Trim Sheath
The shoes are all from Aldo and you can find them here: Red Low Heel Black Heel Yellow and Blue Flat

  1. Oh Ms L & L print!
You got me. I merely stumbled upon the show WNTW when I was living in NorCal a good 8 years ago. My jaw hit the floor. There I was in my overalls (big no no- I even had them in 3 colors! Denim, black & khaki) beyond that I had holes in my jeans, wore men’s tees & always a crappy sneaker. I was guilty of nearly every fashion offense. I can honestly say that I have come a long way, but I can also admit that I’m not “there” yet. I agree that the show really genuinely changes people for the better. You’re so right about what a well fitted, appropriately worn outfit can do. Thanks for your tips Brittany. I can wear cap sleeves but not sleeveless (it’s religious). What could I pay you to help me shop??? I seriously love your style.

    • Kayla, what a great story! You always look hip and put together when I see you! We could definitely work something out for a shopping trip sometime!

  2. I didn’t know you were a Stacy & Clinton officianado (?) I think I have watched every episode and I always cry. Jack has watched many of them too and has become quite a little expert on evaluating women’s clothing, not just their boobs. How you look and take care of yourself definitely reflects how you feel about yourself. Even if you overdo it, it sends an unintended message. You can help me shop any time. Luv u.

    • Awe, I didn’t realize my in-laws were WNTW fans too?? Wow, we could have a make-over marathon sometime! Xo
