Top 35 Sushi Restaurants in America

sashimi-750 photo credit: a fork & a pencil

The Daily Meal just put out their list of the top 35 sushi restaurants in America and I have been to 2 of them! #18 Matsuhisa in LA is where I discovered my love for sashimi. My friend Mary and I had the Yellowtail Jalapeño and the Tuna Tataki with cilantro dressing and both were melt-in-your-mouth delicious! We also loved the Lobster Ceviche, King Crab Tempura, and the Fish N Chips Matsihisa Style. #34 Sansei has several locations in Hawaii and I just had the pleasure of eating at one last month. The Fresh Hawaiian Ahi Carpacciov Garnished with cilantro & chopped peanuts in a Thai chili vinaigrette blew my mind along with the Crab Ramen with Asian Truffle Broth with cilantro, Thai basil and mild jalapeños. Several Nobu’s made the list but not the Malibu location which is the only one I have been to. Wade and I went there for our 7 year wedding anniversary and did the Chef’s Tasting Menu and shared a bottle of Champagne. It was an amazing meal in a beautiful location right on the water. My local, go-to sushi spot in Long Beach is Sushi Kinoya. I could just eat the cilantro hand rolls all night long! Have you been to any of these spots and what do you love?

Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort and Spa

Last month I had a long time client/friend get married on Waikiki Beach in Oahu and we had the pleasure of spending a week on this beautiful island at The Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort and Spa and it was absolutely fabulous! The lobby was gorgeous, the customer service was top notch, and we were within walking distance of everything. Our room was absolutely amazing with an ocean facing window and ocean view balcony. We spent a lot of time out there. It was paradise!

The stunning view from our balcony. It doesn’t get much better then this! We actually ordered food to go from Arancino di Mare  on our first night and had a romantic dinner under the stars.

I loved waking up to a view of the ocean every morning. It felt like a dream!

The bathroom was spacious and modern with plenty of room for me and the hubs to get ready at the same time. We need this set up at home!

A “Welcome Mai Tai” and shrimp cocktail at the poolside lounge The Moana Terrace was the perfect way to start our trip!

IMG_3250DK’S Crab Ramen with Asian Truffle Broth with cilantro, Thai basil and mild jalapeños at Sansei was my favorite meal of the trip! How decadent can you get?!

The Fresh Hawaiian Ahi Carpacciov Garnished with cilantro & chopped peanuts in a Thai chili vinaigrette at Sansei was so fresh and delicious I could of eaten the whole plate myself!

We rented a jeep for a day for around $100 at the Enterprise that is located in the hotel and gave ourselves a tour of the island. Our first stop was The Dole Plantation. I was obsessed with getting pineapple ice cream and doing the garden maze. It was a complete zoo of tourists but the ice cream was well worth it! Our next stop was the famous Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck in Haleiwa and it did not disappoint. If you like shrimp, garlic and getting messy you are in for a treat. By the time I was done my hands were covered in sauce and I was thrilled to see a giant outdoor sink. With our bellies full of shrimp deliciousness we headed down the road to Waimea Valley where we took a beautiful 1/2 mile walk through the Botanical Gardens to the majestic Waimea Falls where you can swim. It was magical. On the way in/out there is a cafe that serves snacks, beer and wine as well as a gift shop. There is nothing like a cold beer and a little shopping on a hot afternoon!

All in all I found this island to be magical. It dazzled me with its beauty and its wonderful people. I will definitely be back one day. There is still more to eat and see like Pearl Harbor and the Doris Duke house. In the meantime I will just close my eyes and go to my “happy place” on the balcony at The Waikiki Beach Marriott over looking the ocean and try to keep the Aloha spirit alive!

Need help finding the best deals and booking your next trip? My brother and travel agent extraordinaire Derek Albinson can hook it up!

Sofitel Wine Days

The Sofitel in Los Angeles is more then just a hotel. It is an international gathering place with beautiful decor, top notch dining at Estérel, and a fabulous lounge, Riviera 31. Right now for Sofitel Wine Days (through October 31st) order a French wine flight during happy hour and graze their vast spread of the most amazing cheese, olives, honey and snacks all for just $15! What a deal! I recently stopped by and experienced it all…happy hour, dinner and a fantastic jazz show!

The Sofitel Wine Days event takes place during the traditional wine harvest season in France, and offers an opportunity to discover French wines in hotels around the world.

I could of made a meal out of this delicious spread!

I absolutely love this outdoor seating area!

After dinner we walked back into a packed lounge and this amazing jazz band. There are different jazz musicians every Monday night and the doorman told me that Stevie Wonder showed up and played earlier in the year. It was a really fun vibe!

I just want to note our dinner at Estérel. It was to dark to take any good pics but we had a really wonderful meal. To start off the waitress recommended the Strawberry Basil Martini that was sooo refreshing and flavorful but not too sweet, just the way I like a cocktail! Then came a really lovely bread basket full of all different types of deliciousness. We had lamb meatballs as an appetizer which I could of had as an entree because they were so good. They were done Moroccan style with couscous and dates which came as a surprise as I was expecting them to be Italian style in a red sauce. It was a good surprise as they turned out to be my favorite thing! We had a very nice lobster for dinner and really enjoyed the romantic, relaxed vibe of the outdoor dining area. It was a beautiful evening under the stars!

The Sofitel is located at 8555 Beverly Blvd right across the street from the Beverly Center.

Friday Faves

Todays Friday Faves are all about doing! With the recent tragedies in the news it is a big reminder to me to live each day to its fullest, be kind, and tell those you care about that you love them. October is here and although it doesn’t feel like fall in LA I am just embracing the “season” and celebrating! I got my cinnamon broom, something I love to put outside my front door to fragrance my hallway every year, (I hope the neighbors love it as much as I do) and I have had a pumpkin latte or 2. What is your favorite thing about Fall? Here are a bunch of fun things coming up this month. Have a super fun weekend! XO

* I am so excited about Rise of The Jack O’Lanterns! I have never been before but it sounds amazing! 5,000 carved pumpkins!!! They are having it at 2 locations in LA, 1 in San Diego and 1 in NY! I already got tix for October 18th!

* Oktoberfest is officially underway with 2 locations in the LA area. Pomona and Torrance. I have only been to the one in Torrance and I think it’s pretty legit. It’s totally campy and fun, full of all things German!

* Celebrate all things autumn and get a jump on your holiday shopping at the Artisanal LA Fall Show Oct 10-11 at The Reef in downtown LA. Purchase tix here!

* Monday Oct. 5th at 7:30pm The Hammer Museum hosts a conversation with Steve Martin and The New Yorker staff writer Adam Gopnik in conjunction with its latest exhibit, “The Idea of North: The Paintings of Lawren Harris” (Oct. 11-Jan. 24). This is free but tix are required.

* Wednesday Oct. 7th at 6:30pm in Pasadena at Vroman’s Chelsea Clinton presents and signs It’s Your World: Get Informed, Get Inspired & Get Going!, and it’s packed with facts, anecdotes and schematics that chart out the world’s problems — along with strategies that any average person can use to think globally, act locally and enjoy thoroughly.
