Soak Soothe Heal

FullSizeRender 2

This book Homemade Bath Bombs, Salts & Scrubs is awesome! There are 300 natural bath recipes that will elevate your soak and help relieve common ailments such as allergies, stress, acne, dry skin and more! The first bath recipe I tried was the Aquarius Meditation Soak and it is wonderful. If I do take a bath its usually on a Saturday night after a long work week but somehow this recipe appealed to me in the morning. I have had 2 of these baths in the morning this week and I would of thought it would of put me back to sleep but as relaxing as it is, it was the perfect way to start my day. I might actually start getting up early to do this more often. I can’t wait to try some of the others!

When gathering the ingredients for this recipe I found a bucket of Dead Sea Salts at Whole Foods for $22 and the Neroli Oil was $40. I was shocked at how expensive they were but after taking the bath it was worth it and these items will last a long time. I could only find lavender epsom salts at my local drugstore but I figured it was ok since there is lavender oil in the recipe. I couldn’t find rose oil so I substituted with rose water that I keep in my fridge to use as a refreshing toner in the summer. I had the lavender oil and baking soda. I think I will look online for ingredients and oils for some of the other recipes.

Homemade Bath Bombs, Salts, & Scrubs is $14.95

Wow…can you believe Memorial Day Weekend is already upon us? It totally snuck up on me and I have no idea what I am doing! Whatever you do have a fun, be safe, and relax. Here a few of my current faves as well as some upcoming faves! Cheers!

* While in Vegas we saw the Michael Jackson One Show at Mandalay Bay. It is a must see for any MJ fan! There is memorabilia, tons of photo opps and an awesome gift store where my mom and I found the coolest boombox reusable totes for just $8! Stay tuned for a full post on it soon!

* We saw a ton of billboards heading into Las Vegas for the show Puppetry of the Penis. We thought it was a joke but oh no, it is real, and looks hilarious. Unfortunately the showtimes didn’t work with our plans. It will be at the top of our list for next time!

* The Neon Museum just outside of DTLV is home to a ton of historical neon signs. Its like a neon sign graveyard and a totally cool, unique and educational thing to do on your next trip to Sin City! Full post coming soon.

* Looking for a lash growing alternative? Checkout Primolash…it strengthens, lengthens and darkens your lashes in just 8 weeks.

* See the Green Day musical American Idiot in a warehouse in DTLA now through June 7th.

* Love seafood? Love brunch? Want to splurge on an amazing afternoon? CEVICHE PROJECT is back for an exclusive Sunday brunch at Wood Handcrafted Pizza in Silverlake on May 31st at 1PM!

The line includes a daily vitamin which I love and a daily cleanser that will leave you feeling squeaky clean. You can see my video of everything I tried here and (for a limited time) get a starter kit for $5 only here!

Dirty Chick

I have recently been listening to an audio copy of Dirty Chick by Antonia Murphy on my way home from work and it is fantastic! Funny and raw, it’s a real look at farm life in another country told by an American city girl. When she compared the feel of a alpaca’s nose to a human penis I was sold. I was laughing hysterically, alone in my car, going 10 MPH on the 405 FWY. Not many of you know this but my alter ego is a farm girl living the “simple life”, baking, gardening, and making cheese with some farm animals and maybe some kids running around. So, this book really speaks to me. I still have a few hours of listening left but I have been so excited about it that I wanted to share it with you now!

Listen to an audio sample here

Here is a little bit about the book from Indie Bound:

“One month into our stay, we’d managed to dispatch most of our charges. We executed the chickens. One of the cats disappeared, clearly disgusted with our urban ways. And Lucky [the cow] was escaping almost daily. It seemed we didn’t have much of a talent for farming. And we still had eleven months to go.”

Antonia Murphy, you might say, is an unlikely farmer. Born and bred in San Francisco, she spent much of her life as a liberal urban cliché, and her interactions with the animal kingdom rarely extended past dinner.

But then she became a mother. And when her eldest son was born with a rare, mysterious genetic condition, she and her husband, Peter, decided it was time to slow down and find a supportive community. So the Murphys moved to Purua, New Zealand—a rural area where most residents maintained private farms, complete with chickens, goats, and (this being New Zealand)  sheep. The result was a comic disaster, and when one day their son had a medical crisis, it was also a little bit terrifying.

Dirty Chick chronicles Antonia’s first year of life as an artisan farmer. Having bought into the myth that farming is a peaceful, fulfilling endeavor that allows one to commune with nature and live the way humans were meant to live, Antonia soon realized  that the reality is far dirtier and way more disgusting than she ever imagined.  Among the things she learned the hard way: Cows are prone to a number of serious bowel ailments, goat mating involves an astounding amount of urine, and roosters are complete and unredeemable assholes.

But for all its traumas, Antonia quickly embraced farm life, getting drunk on homemade wine (it doesn’t cause hangovers!), making cheese (except for the cat hair, it’s a tremendously satisfying hobby), and raising a baby lamb (which was addictively cute until it grew into a sheep). Along the way, she met locals as colorful as the New Zealand countryside, including a seasoned farmer who took a dim view of Antonia’s novice attempts, a Maori man so handy he could survive a zombie apocalypse, and a woman proficient in sculpting alpaca heads made from their own wool.’

Part family drama, part cultural study, and part cautionary tale, Dirty Chick will leave you laughing, cringing, and rooting for an unconventional heroine.

Valentine’s Day Gift Guide

Valentine’s Day is my favorite holiday and it is next Saturday!!! I am easily charmed by all of the red, pink, hearts, lips and glitter. I could (an usually do) go nuts this time of year in places like Target and The Dollar Tree for themed stuff to create the perfect, romantic evening at home. We love making homemade pasta and drinking bubbles like this. As much as I love fresh flowers I hate them on Valentine’s Day because I know the prices are always jacked up. Here are a few flower alternatives that would make my heart sing!

Friday Faves

Friday-Faves
Happy Weekend! Friday is here and I have cleared my calendar to spend the day celebrating (one of my besties) Keri’s 40th birthday! She has a lot to celebrate and is one of the strongest women I know. She is currently battling her 3rd round with cancer and is determined to kick its ass. You can see her story here. Happy Birthday Keri! I love you! What is everyone else up to? I’m sure I will tune into the Super Bowl at some point on Sunday. I always look forward to betting, sipping Champagne, hot dogs, the halftime show, and the commercials. This year I’m bummed that Katy Perry is the performer. She bores me. Who knows though, maybe this will be her day? I will keep an open mind. Whatever you do be grateful, be inspired and feel the love! Here are some of my favorite things this week…

* My new favorite hand cream is from The Soap & Paper Factory. It smells like Jasmine and is in the prettiest little tube that looks great on my nightstand. I love to use it on my hands at night before bed!

* I just got this book How to Travel the World on $50 a Day and it has totally inspired me! Matt Kepnes has some fantastic tips for traveling cheaper, smarter and longer!

* I love a good exfoliator and now I am hooked on the Peter Lamas Exfoliating Pumpkin Facial Scrub. It smells good enough to eat and is safe for use on all skin types. Although the granules may seem large they are smooth, natural and work very gently to polish away dead skin cells. I have even used it on my body! At night I like to follow it up with the Peter Lamas Nourishing Buriti Oil Moisturizer for amazingly soft, hydrated skin in the morning. These products are made with high quality ingredients and won’t break the bank!

* Here are 15 seniors with outrageous style that you should be following on Instagram right now!

* Eat, drink and be merry while supporting Planned Parenthood LA at Food Fare 2015! From its prestigious beginnings as a cooking demonstration with Julia Child in 1979, Food Fare has become one of the oldest and most recognized food events in Los Angeles. Food Fare will celebrate its 36th anniversary on Thursday, March 5, 2015 at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica and will once again feature well over 100 of LA’s best restaurants, caterers, wineries, breweries, libations and vendors!

*Yes, I admit I am a bit of a product junkie but this Basil Lemon Body Butter from Korres rocks my world. The scent is so light and fresh that you can still use a fragrance over it and it is super smoothing and hydrating. The perfect winter pick me up. Treat yo self!

* I have always wanted to see The Northern Lights and this tour in March looks amazing!

* I am a sucker for a silly play on words and thats why I love these rock themed desserts from Monterey Meringues. With names like Oreo Speedwagon, Miley Citrus, Nuts N Roses, ZZ Toppers and many more. They are as wild looking as their names! You’ve gotta see them!

* This new website BeautyTV has so many great tips and video tutorials all in one place! They have a lot of great tutorials for nails. I recently found KBShimmer polish. It is another high quality brand that won’t break the bank and they have a ton of fun colors, glitters and shimmers!

* I just tried Blue Apron for the first time and LOVE it! You get all the ingredients to make 3 meals for 2 people for just $60 delivered to your door. The recipes are really good, things I would never think of making, and delicious. And, there is no waste. They give you the exact amount of everything you need and all of their packaging is recyclable. I also love free cooking apps like Make A Meal that let you type in what you have in your kitchen and then it gives you recipes based on what you already have. It would be perfect if you are snowed in but still have internet!

* Get a free card from Watertree Health to help cover the cost of prescription meds and help the Make-A-Wish foundation.
