the ferry building

Outside with my Ferry Building treasures!

The Ferry Building is along the Embarcadero at the end of Market Street and is one of my favorite places in San Francisco. I always make time to stop by when visiting the city. The crazy thing is, I have friends who moved to the bay area and have never been there!? (Geri-I’m talking about you!) I think if I lived there I would go every week to eat and shop. This unique marketplace provides a space for the greater Bay Areas agricultural bounty and renowned specialty food purveyors to work together and sell their products under one roof. It’s like a cool, artists community with gourmet ingredients and goods. Originally built in 1898, The Ferry Building was a transportation focal point for the city. Later,in 2003,  it was renovated and reopened as a marketplace. Here’s some of what The Ferry Building has to offer:

We love the Blue Bottle Coffee Company. They take pride in their coffee and brew each cup to order!

They have a perfect cappuccino!

Miette means “little crumb” in French and this little pastry shop was inspired by the patisseries in Paris!

I am a sucker for sea salt caramels and Recchiuti Chocolates makes some of the best!

Do you remember doing spin art a kid? I do! Spin art chocolates, how cool!!

On this trip I tried to be good and just have a single sea salt caramel but I ended up going back and buying a box!

Delicious flavored olive oils from Stonehouse. My favorite is the Meyer Lemon!

I love that you can taste all the olive oil before you buy it!

Fresh, local seafood is abundant!

Fresh oysters anyone?

The  ground floor houses the shops and restaurants, the 2nd floor provides office space and the ceiling is a 660′ high skylit Nave that lets in beautiful, natural light.

Cheese glorious cheese at The Cowgirl Creamery!

The Hog Island Oyster Company uses Acme Bread and cheese from The Cowgirl Creamery for their famous and outrageous Grilled Cheese SandwichI love it when local businesses work together instead of competing against each other.

I got a delicious honey balsamic vinegar here at beekindI love the name!

More then 20 varieties of cured meats at Boccalone! The salumi are handcrafted in small batches across the Bay in Oakland, using sustainably raised, heritage-breed pork and the highest quality spices and salts.

For the true meat lover, Boccalone offers portable meat cones to enjoy while strolling through the marketplace!

If you are a mushroom lover like me, Far West Fungi is not to be missed!

Far East Funghi sells a “grow your own mushroom kit”. I bought one once, grew a bunch of mushrooms and enjoyed them for months!

We were drooling over these incredible looking tomatoes at Farm Fresh To You.

Enjoying a feast outside at The Hog Island Oyster Company.

The ridiculously good clam chowder at The Hog Island Oyster Company is made to order. They drop the clams into the flavorful homemade broth and when the clams open up its ready to serve!

The beautiful view of the bay from the Hog Island Oyster Company!

I hope you have enjoyed my little journey thru the Ferry Building. If you have been before, I hope this reminds you how wonderful it is (Sandy-I know you miss it) and if you haven’t, I hope you put it at the top of your list of places to go the next time you are in San Francisco!

Being a long time Beastie Boys fan, I had to check out the art show at The Geffen Contemporary At Moca now through this Sunday the 6th. It is curated by Mike D (congrats to the Beastie Boys for their recent induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame) and features 16 artists, bands, food, a coffee bar and more and admission is FREE! I would also recommend checking out the exhibit by Cai Guo-Qiang in the same building. Crop circles, gun powder and explosions. Amazing stuff!

Outside of Moca

The show is sponsored by Mercedes-Benz. Our friends Mark & Silvia with Wade, keeping it real.

A set of cards featuring each of the artists was given to us at the door.

Hanging at the coffee bar in the middle of the art show.

Pinwheels by Ara Peterson & Jim Drain

Painting by Sage Vaughn

If you are looking for something to do this weekend I would highly recommend checking out the exhibits and festivities at The Geffen Contemporary 152 N Central Ave. LA CA 90012.

*This is an add on to this post. I just found out that Adam Yauch, the founding member of The Beastie Boys passed away this morning at age 47 after battling cancer for the last 3 years. May he rest in peace.

jack mormon coffee co.

The Jack Mormon Coffee Co. in Salt Lake City, UT is one-of-a-kind and so is its owner Cruser. We were initially drawn to it because of the name and it’s great YELP reviews, then we tried the coffee. It was one of the best, tastiest cups we had ever had and we were hooked! The shop boasts four roasting machines and a vast assortment of raw coffee beans from around the world. It’s all about freshness and each batch of beans is roasted to order. This produces a magic that couldn’t otherwise be obtained without the artisanal approach Cruser takes at his shop. When you walk into Jack Mormon Coffee Co., you’ll notice a few bar stools facing the front window, really impressive coffee equipment, and a Buddha statue peeking out from the back watching over the shop (he believes it to be an ancient Cambodian relic and plans to return it someday). There are no fluffy couches, no wi-fi, just straight forward amazing coffee. It’s a get in and get out kind of shop. He’s doing things his own way and it’s working. He has collaborated with other local business to produce espresso infused chocolate truffle bars and a sold out run of Jack Mormon Coffee Stout (he’s working on more!). If you are a coffee lover, this place should not be missed the next time you’re in SLC but be aware they are only open from 10-6!
