I have been obsessing over this amazing house in the desert for years and I had a dream about it last night so I decided it was a sign that I needed to write about it!
Every time Wade and I are in the desert we love to scout around looking at houses and properties and daydream about what our perfect desert vacation home would look like. Several years ago we were on a side street off of the main Highway 62, turned a corner and saw this. What was it? We had to get closer. We drove a few streets over until we were right in front of a giant iron gate shaped like a rib cage. It was definitely the coolest thing we had ever seen in the desert. Ever since then, when we are out there, we have to drive by and look at it. We would always try to google the address and nothing would ever come up. It was so mysterious. Was it a Scientology retreat? A UFO study center? We had many different ideas. Finally, on our last trip out this summer, after doing our usually drive by, I googled it again and something came up! It is an amazing house built from 1988-1993 by architect Kendrick Bangs Kellogg and craftsman John Vurgin for artist Beverly Doolittle and was for sale for 3 million. That seems like a bargain. If only I had that kind of money I would buy it in a heartbeat. I wonder who bought it? Another mystery to ponder.
The 29 Palms Inn is definitely on my list of Happy Places. I have been going there at least once a year for the last 10 years and wrote about it once before here. Just 2 1/2 hours outside of LA, it is situated on the 9,000 year old Oasis of Mara on 70 acres that look up to the Joshua Tree National Park, and is one of the most relaxing places I have ever been!
I wouldn’t be sharing my happy place with the world if I thought it would somehow ruin it. There are only 24 different lodging options on the property (the adobes are my favorite) and with so many things do and places to relax it never feels crowded. You can hang by the pool, nap in one of the hammocks, stroll through the beautiful garden, get some sun on your private patio, go for a hike or check out the art at the local museum and the 29 Palms Inn Creative Center.
The whole place oozes with a laid back, magical mellow vibe that I love. There is no room service, no phone, just a simple comfortable place to clear your head and unwind, and at night you can usually hear coyotes howling in the distance which is an added bonus!
Even when its 100 degrees out there it is relaxing and tolerable says the girl from Florida!
We always look forward to eating dinner at the restaurant when we come out as it is delicious and they use the herbs and veggies they grow in their garden. I love the sautéed mushrooms and have to get them every time. On our last trip the restaurant was closed for construction and the Inn provided dinner for all the guests out on the lawn followed by an outdoor movie. I must admit I was a little bummed at first that I wasn’t getting my mushrooms but it ended up being so much fun!

Last Saturday was something dreams are made of. Me and 4 other bloggers were whisked away by car and driver to a VIP Shoppers Tent at The Desert Hills Premium Outlets in Cabazon, given a goodie bag full of gift cards, coupons and other treasures, and turned loose to check out the new stores and shop for 5 hours! What an amazing day!
Ted Baker (one of my faves) is one of the new stores along with Alexander McQueen, Alice + Olivia, Helmut Lang, La Perla, MaxMara, Rag & Bone New York, and many more!
It has taken me a little while to get on board with this mojave print trend. When I still had my dreadlocks I felt like the total look was too “dirty hippie”, but now with my new short cut I feel like I can rock it. The first piece that drew me in was this army jacket by nameless that I found at my friend Dayna’s awesome boutique Prism. (If you haven’t already been, go! She has a great eye and there is something for everyone!) Then, I came across this fun dress by edmé and esyllte on the $20 rack at Double Take. It fit perfectly AND has pockets! To pull it all together and add a tough edge, I found these Steve Madden boots during the recent Nordstrom sale. This is definitely what I will be living in the rest of the summer!
