Friday Faves

Todays Friday Faves are all about doing! With the recent tragedies in the news it is a big reminder to me to live each day to its fullest, be kind, and tell those you care about that you love them. October is here and although it doesn’t feel like fall in LA I am just embracing the “season” and celebrating! I got my cinnamon broom, something I love to put outside my front door to fragrance my hallway every year, (I hope the neighbors love it as much as I do) and I have had a pumpkin latte or 2. What is your favorite thing about Fall? Here are a bunch of fun things coming up this month. Have a super fun weekend! XO

* I am so excited about Rise of The Jack O’Lanterns! I have never been before but it sounds amazing! 5,000 carved pumpkins!!! They are having it at 2 locations in LA, 1 in San Diego and 1 in NY! I already got tix for October 18th!

* Oktoberfest is officially underway with 2 locations in the LA area. Pomona and Torrance. I have only been to the one in Torrance and I think it’s pretty legit. It’s totally campy and fun, full of all things German!

* Celebrate all things autumn and get a jump on your holiday shopping at the Artisanal LA Fall Show Oct 10-11 at The Reef in downtown LA. Purchase tix here!

* Monday Oct. 5th at 7:30pm The Hammer Museum hosts a conversation with Steve Martin and The New Yorker staff writer Adam Gopnik in conjunction with its latest exhibit, “The Idea of North: The Paintings of Lawren Harris” (Oct. 11-Jan. 24). This is free but tix are required.

* Wednesday Oct. 7th at 6:30pm in Pasadena at Vroman’s Chelsea Clinton presents and signs It’s Your World: Get Informed, Get Inspired & Get Going!, and it’s packed with facts, anecdotes and schematics that chart out the world’s problems — along with strategies that any average person can use to think globally, act locally and enjoy thoroughly.

Vitality and Verve at The Long Beach Museum of Art

Yesterday we spent the afternoon with my in-laws at The Long Beach Museum of Art viewing the current show Vitality and Verve: Transforming the Urban Landscape. It is a fantastic show of street art and many of the large pieces were painted right on the museum walls! There is a fascinating video that goes along with the show (on the 2nd level) that captures the artists at work and the view of the ocean from up there is spectacular (bonus!). I think this show is perfect for anyone, any age and its on until October 25th. Here is a little peek at the show…there is so much more to it you have to just see for yourself!

My Little Allies by Audrey Kawasaki This was one of the first pieces I saw and was one of my favorites! I love the colors and the whimsical feel.

Too Many Names by Saber This piece is visually beautiful but also has a serious undertone. The artist wrote the names of 534 people killed by police in the US in 2015 to date, including local Long Beach teenager, Hector Morejon.

FullSizeRender 2
Envelope by Brendan Monroe was gorgeous ( I am a sucker for black and white) and the perfect place to take a selfie!

Teef by Matt Small I loved the colors and mixed media used in this piece. It is soft yet powerful.

This was one of my favorite things all day. As a bonus, there are a bunch of murals all over the city of Long Beach that go along with the show. This one was done by Cryptik on the side of an apartment building on Alboni and 1st and it breathtaking! He had 2 beautiful pieces in the museum as well. Some of the others are:
Hueman and Madsteez Mural-JW Goodson’s Salon parking lot at 2205 E Broadway
Bumblebee Mural-Berlin Coffee House/Fingerprints Music on 4th St
Benjie Escobar Mural-City Hall East/Alamo Ct
Tristan Eaton and James Jean Mural-The Varden Hotel by The Birdcage Coffee Shop 335 Pacific.

Coming up on Friday Oct. 23rd is LBMA Afterdark. It’s $20 from 7-10pm and you can see the show and there will be DJ’s and a full bar.

Afterwards we ate at our new favorite place Padre. They have Happy Hour everyday from 4-8 and my favorites are the Watermelon Fizz, Fried Chicken Tacos, Brussel Sprouts, Fried Rice and Guacamole. Cheers!

Population Wars

I have been a fan of the band Bad Religion for over 20 years and couldn’t wait to dive into this book, written by lead singer Greg Graffin. After seeing them in concert for the first time in high school and being the typical rebellious teenager, I couldn’t wait to wear my new concert t-shirt to school that said Fuck Religion on it. I was really going to make a statement right? Well, not if my mom had anything to do with it. She quickly whipped out a Sharpie marker and insisted on filling in the lines on the “F” so the shirt said “luck” Religion before I made my way out the door. It’s a memory I will forever cherish. Here I sit, all these years later, still a little rebel with a fire inside of me to question everything and continue to learn and challenge myself. I am only halfway through the book but have loved every minute of it. Greg Graffin you are one smart dude. Thank you for continuing to open my mind to new ideas.

In POPULATION WARS: A New Perspective on Competition and Coexistence (Thomas Dunne Books; September 15, 2015; $27.99), Greg Graffin, lead singer of Bad Religion and author of Anarchy Evolution, offers a fresh argument on the biological roots of competition. A paradigm- shifting book about why humans behave the way they do and the ancient history that explains that behavior, Graffin argues that we need to rethink the reasons for war, not only the human military kind, but also Darwin’s ‘war of nature,’ and find hope for a less violent future for mankind.

GREG GRAFFIN is the lead singer and a songwriter in Bad Religion. He obtained his PhD in zoology at Cornell University, and has lectured at UCLA and Cornell. He is the coauthor of Anarchy Evolution, with Steve Olson. He travels regularly between the cities he considers home, Ithaca, New York, and Los Angeles, California.

To mark the release of “POPULATION WARS,” Graffin will embark on a series of special live appearances. These unique events will offer an unprecedented perspective into the longstanding relationship between Graffin’s academic and musical spheres, examining the correlation between song lyrics and topics expressed in his new book. The events will feature some live acoustic performances of songs related to the book interspersed with spoken word and followed with a question and answer segment. These are the last remaining dates:
Wed 9/23/15 – Portland, OR – Hawthorne Theater
Fri 9/25/15 – Los Angeles, CA – Bootleg
Sun 9/27/15 – Santa Ana, CA – Constellation

A Staycation at The Residence Inn Marriott LAX

Happy Labor Day! Given the holiday, I thought today would be the perfect time to talk about “staycations”. I think that the one night vacation is a thing of beauty. Have you ever tried it? It is a great way to just get away, relax and recharge without going very far or even leaving your own city. We recently spent a night at the new The Residence Inn Marriott at LAX and did just that. It was a fun little mini get away!

LAXAX - Exterior

The entire hotel was full of cool, modern LA based art. I especially loved the color changing picture behind the front desk showing a mash up of all things iconic to LA.

Chillin in the lobby…

The lobby is very comfortable and spacious and offers plenty of places to sit and relax and is also where they serve their FREE hot breakfast in the morning! They have a flight monitor, luggage scale, and FREE WIFI throughout the hotel which is convenient for travelers.

All of the rooms are fresh, spacious suites with large live/work areas and full kitchens. You are encouraged to bring your own food and beverages but if you don’t have time you can have them grocery shop for you! There is even a bbq area out by the pool. If you would rather just pick up a bite to eat there they have 3 of my faves…Starbucks, Jersey Mike’s, and Z Pizza. Our room had a 180 degree view of airport runways which is perfect for aviation geeks!

LAXAX - Fire Pit

Lounging by the fire pit at night with a glass of wine is the perfect way to enjoy the outdoor space and unwind!

One of my favorite parts of this one nighter was the robot butler. He is a prototype that they are trying out. I requested a shower cap in the morning and this showed up at my door. I was impressed and he was so darn cute. Its the future people, get ready!

I would highly recommend a “staycation” at The Residence Inn Marriott LAX if you are looking to relax, have work to do or have an early flight to catch. It’s conveniently located blocks from the airport with a free shuttle every 20 min., is close to the beaches that you can access by their Ocean Express Trolly, and close to the 405 for easy access into LA.

Have you had a “staycation” lately? I would love to hear all about it!
